Admittedly, IELTS and TOEFL are two of the most famous English proficiency tests. They are trusted worldwide by almost every single institution because they have a long history and lots of advantages. But do you know their advantages compared to the Duolingo English Test - DET?

Let us see what are their advantages and disadvantages compared to one another.

1. Cost

IELTS and TOEFL need human examiners to check everything on your test; therefore, they cost lots more money than DET.

Even though human proctors will review the video recordings of your answer, DET costs just $65 per test because it is an adaptive test scored mainly by computer algorithms. With the help of technology, everything gets much easier as all things should be.

2. Length

Have you ever felt tired of working for too long? It will be more challenging and exhausting when taking a 3-hour test. Test-takers should not experience something that we know for certain that they have been working so hard for the test.

Duolingo has researched and developed a great test that you only need to spend 1 hour on all four skills, and you can achieve your dream – get through the admissions process.

3. Locations

It takes so many resources, including time, transportation fees, and energy, to go to test centres when we take IELTS or TOEFL. However, things have changed: you can take DET completely online and anywhere you prefer.

4. Institutions Accepted

Again, IELTS and TOEFL have long history, so their names say everything. They are prestigious, respected, and trusted by almost every institution on earth.

In contrast, DET is currently accepted by over 5,100 institutions (updated on 01 August 2024) all over the world, which is a huge number when it is only six years old. Something special here is that more and more universities accept DET besides IELTS and TOEFL to offer students another option to prove their English proficiency.

5. Reservation

It does not take much time to book IELTS or TOEFL tests, but it’s better without it so we can save that amount of time and energy on other essential matters.

DET allows you to take the tests without reservation. Sounds better?

6. Valid for

Yes, all the test certificate is valid for 02 years.

7. Score’s ready in

It takes up to 13 days to receive an IELTS certificate, while you need to wait for 6 days for a TOEFL certificate. But you only need to wait maximum 2 days for your DET scores; sometimes, it just takes several hours for your score arrives.

8. How often can you take?

You can take another IELTS test right away after receiving your score, but you need to wait 12 days as of a previous test date to take another one. However, you can take DET up to 03 times within 30 days period.

9. Preparation Materials

When you go for a search, you will find tons of IELTS and TOEFL practicing questions, tips, strategies, advice, and so on to support you take the test more efficiently.

Regarding DET, it’s a bit harder because the test is quite new in the market, so not too many trainers or organisations focus on sharing materials about DET. However, we have got you covered by developing the best simulation for your Duolingo English Test preparation, including instantly detailed feedback for all question types.
