We will share the rest with you to continue our Everything about Duolingo English Test in this part 3 article. Let’s start with Understanding your scores.
7. Understand your scores
If your test is certified, you will be able to access your certificate through your email or log in to the Duolingo English Test official website.
A Duolingo English Test certificate will look like this:
a. Overall score
Your English proficiency is a holistic score on a scale from 10 to 150 in 5-point increments. It is aligned to the CEFR, IELTS® Academic, and TOEFL iBT®.
University institutions have different requirements for admission. Hence, you should check the university’s website beforehand to see their admissions thresholds.
Here are a few comparisons you may be interested in.
Comparison with IELTS® Academic
This concordance is based on 991 individual test takers who took the Duolingo English Test and reported their recent IELTS scores to DET. The correlation coefficient is .78, which is considered a strong positive statistical relationship for comparing scores.
Comparison with TOEFL iBT® This concordance is based on 2,319 individual test takers who took the Duolingo English Test and reported their recent TOEFL iBT scores to DET. The correlation coefficient is .77, which is considered a strong positive statistical relationship for comparing scores.
Comparison with CEFR
The CEFR framework describes six levels of language proficiency, and you can find ranges of scores on the Duolingo English Test that correspond to each level below.
b. Sub-scores
Literacy
The test taker’s ability to read and write.
Comprehension
The test taker’s ability to read and listen.
Conversation
The test taker’s ability to listen and speak.
Production
The test taker’s ability to write and speak.
The sub-scores are different from other tests because, according to DET, research shows that combined skills can better represent how language is used in real life. Natural language use requires people to apply multiple skills simultaneously.
All the sub-scores are weighted combinations of the question types contributing to each sub-score.
c. How long is the result valid?
The validity period lasts for two years, and the only way to your test certificate is to send it through your online account.
Moreover, if you want to retake the test for any reason, DET allows you to take it anytime within 30 days of the date of your first certified test. In case you complete a test, and your results are not certified, you can retake it whenever you like because it will not count against the two-test limit within 30 days.
8. Share your results
a. How to send your results

b. How institutions use results
Duolingo English Test is an English proficiency test; therefore, institutions use it to measure your English proficiency, which is comparable with other English tests such as IELTS or TOEFL. The Duolingo English Test will help you pass the admissions process if your results meet their English requirements.
c. What institutions see
Your Duolingo English Test certificate includes two main parts: Your score report and Writing - Speaking samples.
Your score report: Institutions see what you see, including your overall score and sub-scores.
Writing and Speaking samples:As you already know, the Writing sample is a scored question, while the Speaking sample is not. Institutions use them to get to know you better, especially your English skills. Therefore, we strongly suggest you show off your unique personality and abilities to pursue your institutions. So, make sure you do your best!
9. Conclusion
Millions of students across the globe who dream of pursuing higher education are predominantly in developing countries. Hence, spending a huge amount of wages on IELTS or TOEFL classes is challenging, especially lots of them have to travel hundreds of miles to the test centers. It’s time-consuming as well.
