When test-takers prepare their DET, there are so many questions that they need answers to. So we will share the top 10 most frequently asked questions concerning the Duolingo English Test.
Let’s get yourself ready and explore all answers.
1. How often can I take the Duolingo English Test?
You can take DET up to 03 times in 30 days period. For example, you take your first test on 1 July 2022, and you can take only 02 more tests until 31 July 2022.
2. Can I get a Study Visa/ Permit with a DET certificate?
Yes, you can, but not 100% accurate. Why? DET, IELTS, or TOEFL are just English proficiency tests that you need to get through the admissions process at your chosen university. If you receive a Letter of Offer and then a Letter of Confirmation from your dream university, it means they have tested your English level and confirmed that you are able to study there.
However, your financial status, your study plan, and how you answer questions in your Visa interview are way far more critical. So we strongly suggest you contact your chosen university for confirmation and detailed consultation.
Specifically, suppose you apply for a Study Visa/ Permit in Canada. In that case, you will only need a Duolingo English Test certificate to request a Study Permit if only your chosen university is a designated learning institution (DLI).
3. Why didn’t I get certified?
The Duolingo English Test is accepted worldwide because of its integrity. To maintain integrity, they have to set up several rules that test-takers need to follow strictly. Otherwise, their test results will never be certified.
There are always reasons that you don’t pay attention to, which leads to uncertified results.
4. Is DET easier than IELTS, PTE, TOEIC and TOEFL?
When it comes to the English Proficiency element, it is simply not true as all these tests help universities or employees evaluate your English level to decide whether you are able to study or work there or not. So, DET is NOT easier than the rest.
How about their question formats? Some people reckon DET formats are tougher because you have very limited time to answer each question. For example, let’s take a look at the following question.
---
Describe a successful small business that you know about.
what business/ company it is
what this business does
how you know about this business
and explain why you think this business/ company is successful
When you see it, what do you remember first? Is it Task 2 in the IELTS speaking? Yes, you are totally correct. You have 1 minute to prepare your answer and 2 minutes to speak in IELTS, while you only have 20 seconds to prepare and 90 seconds to speak in DET. But do you think DET formats are tougher?
The last to compare is their convenience; DET is way better and more convenient as you can stay at home and take the test in a 1-hour session any time you prefer without booking an appointment in advance.
5. How long are my Duolingo English Test results valid for?
As with other English proficiency tests such as IELTS and TOEFL, your DET results last for two years.
6. May I use more than one email address to complete a test?
You definitely should NOT; if you use more than one email address to take the test, you are violating the rules. So Duolingo has the right to suspend the refund or block your secondary account. If this happens, you need to contact their support team for further assistance.
7. What are the consequences of violating the rules?
If the violation is not serious, your results will not be certified. But if the violation is extremely severe, you may also be permanently banned from taking the Duolingo English Test. Read DET rules here to avoid uncertified results.
8. Can I purchase a coupon from a third-party seller?
Please don’t do this. Duolingo does not sell any coupons through a third party, so they will not accept them if you use. In other words, you will be losing your money if you buy coupons from a third-party seller.
9. Is the overall score an average of the sub-scores?
It is not; even if computer-algorithm scores your test results, human proctors will review your video recordings to give the most accurate scores. Besides, each of the five scores is estimated independently and scored through the questions that contribute to the score.
10. What happens when the time is out?
You should not worry at all, as when the time is out, your answers will be automatically submitted, and they will show you the following questions. If you want to manually move to the next question, feel free to do so.
11. Can I use external keyboards or mouses?
Yes, test-takers can use an external keyboard and/ or mouse. But DO NOT switch to others while taking the test.
12. How trusted is the Estimated score to evaluate my proficiency?
This is an interesting question; we would say it’s nearly 100% trusted because most of the time, the results are in the range of the estimated scores.
The answer is NO. There is no way to transfer your untaken exams to others because the Duolingo English Test is a high-stakes exam. Once test-takers purchase any tests, they either take them or lose all in 21 days after purchasing.
14. Can I use Windows 7 to take the DET?
Devices and Operating systems are other criteria that test-takers are concerned about before taking the test. According to the Duolingo English Test, its application only supports Windows and macOS, so do not use ChromeOS or Linux to take it.
Besides, if your system is Windows 7, you should upgrade it to at least Windows 10 or borrow someone else with a more modern operating system to sit for the test because using Windows 7 is very risky, your laptop could be frozen or shut down at any time during the test.
15. Where can I get promo codes to take the test?
This is the question that everyone is looking for an answer. In 2023, the Duolingo English Test introduced the Partner Program with ApplyBoard, from which they distribute DET vouchers to students across the world. Simply put, the Duolingo English Test allows ApplyBoard to distribute to their Recruitment partners, and these Recruitment partners of ApplyBoard distribute DET coupons one more time to end users, who are DET takers.
DET takers should know that scammers are everything, DO NOT listen to anyone if you cannot find information on the Official channel. Please always be cautious to protect yourself.
